PUBG DIES AND COPIES FORTNITE
PubG is being buried alive when it first started the murder of Ceres there was one guiding principle it is not about how many people are currently playing the game or how many copies of the game sold play Arnold's battlegrounds absolutely being killed by its developers and its players day by day and it's dying
in ways that are taking the gaming world by surprise in 2018 the Battle Royale genre is not new to enter payment or from it from massively successful oh it's Jennifer Lawrence franchises to literature even comics and games of G and player unknown himself did not create this slice of gaming that is dominating popular culture but what pub G did do was popularize it it built a foundation that should have allowed this game to continue its rise definitely allow it to become what its competitors now have pub G had more potential than maybe any single release that gaming has seen this generation 50 million copies sold again its player base is still impressive but declining fast while its quality is dropping on a cliff LG has become a spectacular disappointment but a disappointment whose time has begun to come worse yet it has a fanbase who was not only loyal but who enjoy the game and do their best I'll fix the experience and make blue all aware of what needs to come next even if they don't listen with death knocking out of store it's time to look at exactly what is killing pub genes how blue hole is miss emulating a game how its player base is affecting it and maybe most importantly whether or not the game is a chance to turn itself around of G is being killed but how and why Skinner oh that's right I'm not saying Oh tight tactical gameplay in a zombie survival setting that was the idea by a photographer and graphic designer Brendan Green's ARMA 2 mod dayz battle whoo yeah green now known as player unknown was obsessed with the realistic military shooters he's also a guy who says he's never played a Zelda game and according to him doesn't know how to pronounce and a Okajima z' name but he was inspired by the 2000 film battle royale and won it's a place that inspiration somewhere tangible he was never the first guy you'd expect to want to make a game but when dayz branched off of ARMA 2 and became a standalone project his mod began to die and he made a choice he didn't offer from Sony to be consulted on the one time exciting h1z1 where he would end up having his battle royale deal license from him meanwhile a company in Korea was plotting to put just about everything that gamers hate into one product blue hole and brand new studio owned by a company known for mobile games was beginning to come into its own they wanted to create a game for PC but knew they had very little time so they'd used early access and they wanted it to operate as a games as a service essentially they wanted to rush out a game that they said would be like their mobile games that they could rely on for the foreseeable future soon they stumbled upon Green's mod and reached out to him within a week he was in Korea and work had begun work done unfortunately would not last very long see games are meant to be an early access at a state of near completion the idea is to test out a near final product to fix the kinks you don't want an Eightball release well work began fully on pub G around March of 2016 the game had early access just 12 months later it doesn't think a hardcore gaming aficionado to know that a studio a new studio taking their first game of this nature in a new market probably needs more than a year to get that game into a proper state of completion but for most gamers it didn't matter pub G became in here instant phenomenon it took steam by storm quickly rising to the top of the most-played charts and just as quickly becoming a twitch Starling proliferating its name across the web it looked like its rise was going to be unstoppable it looked like it was going to be a major player in gaming for years and then the first shot hit the body of club G and the quality decline began the first drop in player count month-over-month occurred in March when player counts began to fall for real by June 2018 Bungie lost half of its concurrent player base before the map release dropping from 3.2 million down to 1.7 million so what was this first shot [Applause] [Music] business mirrors life ask any sane person on the planet the one thing is a significant other can do to get them to leave quicker than Sony at a Microsoft and Nintendo cross-play party not being listened to one surefire way to kill your multi player game is to ignore your player base and stall out when it comes down to doing the less marketable things you also developer owned by a company that specializes in as already mentioned mobile games in that market you point out a game and from there you support the game by continuing to add marketable features to bring in more players you don't really worry about the problems the game as currently if they aren't gonna make you more money unfortunately that's how pub G a full PC and console release has been developed the game at early access far too early it wasn't even close to being completed the problem is when it launched fully well under a year later it was still far from completed and in the foundational ways that really matter it may have been in worse condition pub G is meant to be a realistic Sims shooter but it's broken in ways to destroy that immersion and have been since launch clip in falling through the map a broken physics engine houses whose walls come and go as they please inconsistencies and things like fall damage where a drop from a set of stairs can randomly lead to death most of this and player on owns battlegrounds is due to a wonky understanding of Unreal Engine 4 the engine the game is built on that is owned by their competition that now has no reason to assist them in fixing these problems something we'll get to it's a game of randomness was meant to only be in its loop drops but as a loud randomness to rest in the game full stop instead of fixing these issues all too often blue all focuses on marketable realities the mobile version the xbox version new maps event passes meanwhile the netcode is still disasterous which means that lag is all too present for many people crashing on every system still occurs far too often and then there's the big one the cheating blue oh absolutely no idea how to manage the cheating blue all from launch on made one thing clear they were not going to region lock the game this was a terrible decision the Chinese player base rose quickly and with it the culture of hacking and cheating that region is known for in gaming this quickly began decimating the game Chinese hackers were everywhere they were flooding servers players couldn't find other players to squat up within the same country or even speak with the cheating quickly spiraled out of control making the game less fun for current players and more intimidating for those just trying to hop in at one point estimates put the number at 60% of the player base being affected if they region like the game this was the excuse sure the Chinese government stepped in and arrested 15 hackers but it was simply an attempt to send a message not to solve the problem and it didn't after years of saying they will not be region like you all finally gave in and began testing the idea recently but at this point you've burnt the bread the damage is done and the weight has been far too long listen to your player base focus on what matters when it matters not what sells but speaking of selling the second pubsey killer is a money move that made no sense [Music] please enjoy one free meal at select founding father locations expires May 16 2006 game developers are obsessed with progress bars the literal bars that show a player's progress why because the human mind is a feeble thing it needs and wants to constantly feel rewarded to feel accomplished and progress bars are a tangible and simple way of manipulating those emotions but sometimes they're also essential to enjoying a game long-term even if they don't exist in the traditional bar format players have begged Blue Hole since of launched a pub G for some semblance of progression within the game they've been met with absolute silence for the game I Club GE progression allows players to invest themselves in the game long term to feel however artificially like they're getting something out of the game of longer they play it and the more dedicated to it they arm it also gives players an incentive to learn and play better pub G offered none of this until very recently loyal fans have been playing and supporting player on battle grounds for two years and yet the game still isn't optimized still isn't cheap free and incomes a ten dollar event pass a thief or a broken game on top of the already paid loot boxes on top of an already paid experience but it's not just a pass that's the problem it's what the past is and represents the past is meant to be a bone thrown to players who want some sort of progression system instead it's become a total and complete ripoff compared to the idea it's trying to emulate this event pass as emulating for tonight's battle paths they both cost the same amount both offer significantly different values pub G's battle past lasts for 30 days and has 30 levels fortnight's seventy days in a hundred levels or tiers there was even reports of the cosmetics you unlocked during those 30 days in pub G going away after the pass is up this means you would be paying actual money real money for virtual items that you don't even get to keep in that virtual space Cosmetics defy the way are far less exciting to most people than the ones offered in its competition this is quite possibly the greediest most home depth decision you could make regarding a paid pass that offers progression that quite frankly both games should have for free worse for pub G is the damn game already has an upfront entry cost they don't need to charge for the event pass but of course they will disrespecting the player base and even further devaluing the game as a whole but the things that are really killing pub G even more obvious coming up on your nothing it's actually borderline impressive to watch how poorly blue ol manages to support bulgy in a market with so many examples of how to support a game properly what's helped in killing pub G is just that the poor support the blue all is offered when it comes to the things that keep even the most content players happy babul is focused on getting the game on phones in the xbox people were wondering why the game was not being updated with genuine content sure the first-person world was great but what about adding content to the game and heading to what the game offers that people were actually asking for it took you all almost two years after the game's early access launch to get their second map near more out two years of waiting for a piece of new content a map that welcomed the game onto the Xbox and out of early access the problem the game was still broken as hell and the map was worse than anyone could have imagined miramar blue walls first attempt at new content was about as awful as player unknown battlegrounds maps could be it was a wide-open flat space sparsely populated that got everything about pub G wrong it created a total and complete lack of balance and new drops spreading them out far too much and making sure that certain drop points were complete and total death sentences it made actually leaving buildings a terrible risk as the flat plains created an unbalanced tree for all that only benefited certain play styles but most importantly it was totally and completely uninteresting and in no way enjoyable to play but instead of being an intelligent developer and affording players a chance to skip the map when it launched they crammed the map down players throats meaning there was no way to avoid it it got so bad that PC players were actually finding workarounds to avoid having to play the map the team tried to fix the map with updates adding buildings and fixing meat drops but it didn't matter the map itself was simply foundationally flawed the next map sonic was codenamed savage and it's a four by four kilometers map half the size of the 8 by 8 kilometer maps the game already offered but it took another 7 months before this map would see the light of day these content updates are far too spread out they lead to a dissipating player base and they do not do nearly enough to keep the casual community in an average of one map per year of varying quality is not going to be enough to keep a multiplayer game of any kind of live and it's the reason for tonight a game with its own problems by the way does its map shifts meteors and events that game is also the final shot fired into the body of pop G shot that blue hole brought on themselves that was an overreaction all publicity is good publicity said every dumb person that's ever done something moronic all PR is not good PR and pub G is essentially sinking in its own PR mess sure it doesn't help that fortnight has become this monolithic pop culture touchstone that has Drake playing in on streams on Friday nights and it doesn't help the floor night has become a far more popular game that offers something much more accessible but the reality is for tonight is not a perfect game it's a really good game but it isn't operating in some sphere of quality that pub G can't read it's not for tonight's actual quality that's killing pub G it's how pub he is handling its competition that is killing pub G for the moment fortnight hit the scene who will engage in the most petty and public behavior possible the company releases statement condemning its competition and calling it a copycat you know the stuff do you used to do in elementary school when Timmy bought the same pair of heels as you to impress little Charisse the game of pettiness came to a head later in 2018 when blue all filed a lawsuit against epic for copyright infringement let's be clear blue all's unlikely to win this lawsuit all this does is sell every gamer everywhere that pub G and blue hole despite their current position in the markets have reached desperation mode and are far more concerned about sabotaging the competition competition that should actually be encouraging to them than they are about improving their game whether or not that's true that kind of PR sends a message the message that even blue will believes fortnight is a superior product whether or not it even hits miss potential is something that you could brand a semi truck full of games with over the past three decades but very rarely does miss potential show itself the way it has with battlegrounds the game was king for a short moment in time but it should have kept its crown it should have been the undoubted leader ahead of a sea of imitators as gaming tries to match the trend it created it should have gone free-to-play in response to his competition it should have done so much differently instead we got a game that was almost immediately supplanted by the first real direct competition of salt began a game whose momentum was stalled almost immediately by developers simply unprepared for this stage it was walking on to in a leader who disappeared amongst the shadows when the real world began it became nothing more than a cheerleader which to be honest I can't blame him Babji is a good game in quite a few ways but into many others it's frustrating and often unenjoyable it's a mixed bag that is skewing in the wrong direction its fanbase sees the great in pub G and those people are not wrong but it's more and more of them become disenchanted and disillusioned with what they see in front of them as more and more are spurned by empty promises and boneheaded decisions it's all too easy to see the cracks in the foundation beginning to open up underneath the game pub G is dying its success was not as sustainable as it should have been but it's only losing a life at the top of gaming the death is one of immense success that died all too quickly Bob G is not going to be the leading scorer and League MVP but that doesn't mean it needs to sit on the bench either if Blue Hole can just get their act together pub G can live a long life as a relatively successful product a life far longer than the h1z1 of the world it doesn't have to fall into the abyss pub G can and should remain somewhere on seems most play the question is can Blue Hole make sure it's out at the bottom of that chart now it's your turn what do you guys think of what puck G has become and more importantly what are the reasons you stop playing pub G you still play Club G or what are the reasons you prefer fortnight over pub G and lastly.
